Shorted Turns Tester model AB-401 indicates interturn short in the windings. If a coil containing a shorted turn is placed over other one of the probes, the bridge will become unbalanced and cause the meter needle to deflect into red zone of the scale.

Gauge selector is provided for large, medium, fine wires. As very less voltage is present it is very safe to operator.

Also as there is no connection is to be done ,operation is very fast & makes it suitable for checking large production batches.

The instrument has an extremely sensitive balanced AC inductance bridge. Coils within the instrument thus creating a field around the probes energize the probes over which the coil is to be tested is placed. Initial Balance is achieved by nulling the meter with the controls marked P1 and P2.These controls are the in-phase and quadrature balance controls for the bridge. After balancing it is ready to use.

The key specification is 3.0 ohms per turn

This value is the maximum ohmic value the bridge is capable of detecting in terms of short.

The maximum sensitivity (2.0 ohms per turn) is achieved between the surface on which the coil is placed and the midpoint of the probe. If maximum sensitivity is required, the length of the coil must not exceed one half the length of the probe.

For this sensitivity two-probe method is recommended.

If less than maximum sensitivity is required, the full length (or even more) of the probe would be usable.

In case of a long coil, it could be tested in two bits”

  • Place the coil over the probe
  • Remove the coil, turn upside down, and place in over the probe again.

Maximum number of turns

The maximum number of turns that can be tested (i.e. in which a single shorted turn that will be detected) will depend on the wire resistance, capacitive reactance and insulation resistance. The type AB-401 will have no trouble with coils upto 10,000 turns and in many cases that number (10,000) will be greatly exceeded.

Maximum Diameter

Determined by the resistance of the single turn (see above), for coils having large diameter (motor coils), deform the coil to a narrow ellipse with sharp bend near the rod.
